Summer child care programs and child care advice

Summer is easily the season that children look forward to, especially when they’ve just spend their year focused in class. While all children do deserve a nice break, the last thing that you want is for them to fall behind in the lessons that they’ve learned throughout their time at school. At Smart Start Bowling Green, we do our best to make sure that the children we care for are invested in throughout the year. One of the ways that we’re able to do that is by finding fun and creative ways for them to continue to develop, even when they’re outside of the classroom.

Here are a few of our favorite lessons to create and how they can be used to help your children develop. As you know, here at Smart Start, we do our best to incorporate all of their senses so that they can develop to their fullest potential. That being said, a lot of the lessons that we’ve included will stray from the standard reading, math and writing that children will practice as they get older, and will focus more on their senses so that they are truly able to fine tune them.

It goes without saying that summer is easily the best time to garden. Food flourishes and feeds a family, but having a green thumb isn’t something we’re all born with. In fact, very few people are actually able to garden at all simply because they were never taught the simple lessons incorporated with this hobby. While it may not be curriculum that you’ll see in standard child care facilities, gardening does teach our children incredibly valuable lessons.

If you’re really in need of a curriculum to tie this lesson to, this is a perfect science experiment to do right in your own home. Understanding how plants grow is something that will be covered for years throughout your child’s education, but also something that they’ll need to understand for the rest of their life. Whether you choose to plant seeds or small plants that already have some leaves or flowers blooming, this is a fantastic way for them to get their hands on this lesson.

Showing your child how seeds are planted in the ground, what roots look and feel like, how much water, air and sun is needed for growth, and the patience and time that it takes to see any results, are all lessons that a child will benefit from. Regardless of what you choose to grow, your child will be able to see the physical changes that happen with what they’re planting, and if it is a type of food, they can enjoy it by eating it too.

Visit a Museum

A museum is a perfect place when you’re looking for a variety of lessons. From history and science to lessons about the body and bugs, you can find all sorts of incredible lessons for your children to interact with. Most museums will offer hands on exhibits where children can actually touch various parts of history or interact to get statistics on themselves. This is an especially fun way to get your child excited about learning, and for most, the museum is a great way to stay excited about learning.

History and science museums aren’t the only type of museum that you can visit. Spending some time at an art museum, and then going home to create some works of art all on their own, children can get a sense of creativity and the various techniques that it’s presented in. This is also a great way to help children understand colors and the combination of colors, which is another lesson that is incredibly important and will definitely be touched on down the road.

Some towns offer free days at the museum, where you can make the most of a good visit. You should expect crowds if that is the case. Investing in a season or summer pass might be the best choice that you can make when you’re looking for a constant opportunity to learn more.

Cooking & Baking

Similar to the gardening lesson that we mentioned above, cooking is a fantastic way to get your children using all of their senses. Cooking is a skill that requires a ton of communication, following steps, adding ingredients, understanding textures, setting a timer and understanding time, and a recognition of smells and tastes. This one skill incorporates so many different skills that it makes it an incredible lesson for children.

Aside from that, baking and cooking both require counting. When you work through the ingredients, you’ll see that there are different measurements and amounts of ingredients that you’ll need, which will give your little one a chance to gain an understanding of how much of each ingredient they’ll need, and what those amounts look like.

Time Outside

Spending some time playing is always a great way to get your child excited about learning. Understanding that these opportunities for education truly are everywhere can provide your child with a new level of excitement for their education. If you choose to head to the park, play a few games or make some games of your own, you’ll see that a lot of popular games include lessons.

Counting and managing a score to a quick soccer, football or volleyball game can keep your child active while learning new physical strengths and learning how to keep a score. Painting on the sidewalk with chalk gives a creative opportunity to work with a different medium on an entirely different surface. Riding bikes or throwing a ball is a great way to work on mobility skills and the like, all while having fun. Gaining stability and perfection in some of these skills are definite ways to make the most of the summer and the opportunity for lessons outside of the classroom.

There are so many different ways that you can continue to challenge your child even when they’re for the summer. With every activity that you set up for them, look for a way that they can develop some skill through the time they spend completing it. This truly is one of the best ways to make learning something that your children can get excited about and continue to get excited about as they grow.
